Composer Dr. Wansoo Chai (1956–) is a deliberate aesthete who began by expressing his “intimate musical poeticism” through art songs and expanded into the vast vocal structures of “Symphonic Chorale.” He reveals the hidden DNA of traditional music and recreates it into universal masterpieces from an Ars Nova perspective through his compositions and arrangements, defining his musical philosophy as an “eruption of longing.”

◈ Theory of Composition: His creative spirit moves beyond sentimental complacency that can lead to wandering; instead, he surfaces the “fundamental idioms latent in music” and seeks an “organizational system reconstructed through a mathematical-logical framework.” His art songs and symphonic chorales align with the rich artistic spirit of German Kunstlied and traditional choral symphonies, while his structural inspiration and holistic approach serve as the core driving force of his musical longing.

◈ Recognized Field of Art Songs: The Conclusion of 150 Years of Korean Art Song History (1800s–1956): He is a historical figure who organized and finalized the evolution of modern Korean art songs, which were influenced by hymns introduced by early Western missionaries over a century and a half. In the book “The History of Korean Art Songs” (Kwahaksa Publishing, 1989), which compiles this 150-year journey, he was officially recorded as the youngest and sole representative composer of the final era (1941–1956).

His representative art song “Nongmu” (Farmers’ Dance) was introduced via FM broadcast during the 1988 Seoul Olympics as the pinnacle of representative Korean art songs.

North America (30 years): Founder of the Canadian-Korean Church Music Council. Served as a College Dean and University President for over 20 years. Developed and academicized “Liturgical Total Art Ministry” and founded the Canada Multicultural Choral.
